Reasons to watch it:
- Pretty solid action sequences, including a great chase scene
- If you’re a fan of the trilogy, and you want to see where it is going or more of the same
Reasons to skip it:
- If you want something as good as the original trilogy
- The characters aren’t as strong
- The acting/directing aren’t as good
- There’s also a very dark scene in the movie.
- Poor pacing
- Convoluted plot
Let’s just get it out of the way. The latest movie in the Bourne series is not as good as the Damon trilogy. Now that’s out of the way, lets talk about the rest of it.
There is a lot of material I enjoyed in the new Bourne movie. Once again they traveled all of the world and took in some beautiful scenery. There was also another chase scene that helped make the series famous. While none of the action was quite as good, it was still better than your average movie.
I’m a big fan of the whole super spy genre, with these insanely badass government bred assassins. This one, however, was missing something. I’m not sure what it was exactly. It may have been that there was no real gimmick. The main character was, well, normal. As normal as an assassin can be anyway. He was just some highly trained guy. Bourne, on the other hand, was this guy who lost all of his memory, and thus all of his training. What he had left was his pure instinct. That’s what made him such a badass, and also what helped drive the film, he was trying to figure everything out. But this isn’t a huge issue for me.
Another fault of the movie was a combination of both the pacing and the plot. The movie was slow to start, and then almost every exciting moment happened in the last 25%. Added to that, you have the stretching-it-too-far plot. All the Bourne movies have had a pretty complex plot line, but this one goes above and beyond. It was never at the point where I couldn’t follow what was happening, but it was at the point that I didn’t really care what was happening. He needed this, she needed that, whatever whatever.
And speaking of he and she, that may have been the worst part. I feel like they had no real chemistry. They both made some idiotic choices for one another. And the ending, I mean common. pretty bad.
But I digress, it is not a total loss. There is still good action to be had here. It was also pretty cool how they intertwined stuff from the 3 Bourne movie into this latest one, so make sure you’re somewhat familiar with it going in. So, as I’ve indicated above, give it a watch if you’re wanting a regular kinds of action movie, but don’t go in expecting it to live up to the original trilogy.
