Safe House was a solid action flick, but nothing more. If you’re looking for Denzel Washington to be as badass as Liam Neeson was in Taken, you will be a bit let down. If you’re looking for him to be anything close to as clever as a Jason Bourne type, too bad. If you’re looking for a good character piece like in Casino Royale, look elsewhere. But, if you’re just looking to watch some guys beat each other up and shoot each other for a couple hours, Safe House has your back. From an action movie perspective, there is nothing wrong with Safe House. Everything it sets out to do it accomplished. I just feel it had the potential to be so much more.
Safe House also used the move of going for the shaky cam during fisticuffs, much like in Bourne. Some people don’t like this but I’ve always been a fan. I feel it better portrays the chaotic nature of a brawl.
There were very few things I really did not like about Safe House. One of them is something of a pet peeve of mine, and it happens all too often in movies. I hate it when cops do something that no real cop would ever do. This time it was a soccer stadium cop unloading a full clip of ammo trying to shoot a guy in a crowd of people. Of course in the process he manages to shoot several civilians. There is no cop in the world stupid enough to start a firefight in such a crowd. I repeat, he started the firefight, he was not returning fire. Sheer idiocy. My other complaint about this movie was the CIAs inadequacies. Specifically, the fact that they had not one but 2 safe houses in the city, but only 4 active agents, with the next closest agents being in Egypt? Come on, if this place warrants having 2 separate safe houses, you must have a few agents on stand by as well.
Anyway, to sum it up, it is a good action movie, but do not expect it to be anything more than that. It’s just a couple hours of entertainment.
